Many gyms teach Jiu Jitsu.
We obsess over it.

We founded Freaks NZ to fill a gap in New Zealand’s training scene: quality No-Gi instruction with a modern approach to grappling and athletic development. We’re affiliated with 10th Planet, known for producing some of the most technical and innovative grapplers in the world.

Whether you’re rolling for the first time or preparing to compete, you’ll train under a curriculum proven to develop real skill. Beginners get structured fundamentals in a safe and welcoming environment. Competitors get to roll with some of NZ’s best grapplers to elevate their game. Everyone gets championship-level coaching focused on technique and progression.

Meet your coaches

Most of the NZ Jiu Jitsu community will know me from the competition scene. While I enjoy the test and thrill of elite competition, I also get a lot of fulfilment from teaching and training others.

I’ve coached Jiu Jitsu, strength & conditioning, and flexibility for more than 10 years. Before I became a full-time coach, I was a high school teacher, led a sport academy, and taught physical education to at-risk youth.

I’m dedicated to three areas of coaching:

  • Sport performance
  • Return to sport and injury rehabilitation
  • Quality of life improvement through exercise and education

Brooke Ashton

Freaks NZ Brown Belt

Ladies Coach

Brooke began Gi Jiu Jitsu in 2015, and transitioned to No-Gi around 2016.

With very few ladies to train with in the South Island, she began training at gyms in the North Island, USA, Japan, and Thailand. In 2017, she received her blue belt from Rick Marshall, a 10th Planet veteran and coach at Evolve MMA in Singapore.

Most of her training partners are men 20kg heavier than her, so her priority since 2018 has been to build a Jiu Jitsu game that actually works for small practitioners. Her incredibly technical style focuses on universal Jiu Jitsu principles, time-tested techniques, and high-percentage submissions.

Brooke also has a wealth of knowledge and experience in strength, power, plyometric, and flexibility training.

Kody Owens

Freaks NZ Brown Belt

Fundamentals Coach

Jiu Jitsu isn’t just a sport for Kody: it’s a fundamental part of his everyday life.

Kody has over 8 years of Jiu Jitsu experience. He built his foundations at Submission Lab Dunedin, and joined Freaks NZ the day it opened.

With a coaching style rich in technical and conceptual knowledge, Kody helps people understand why techniques work — not just how to execute them — so they can improve their abilities on and off the mat.

Kody prefers to guide rather than instruct, and encourages personal exploration of the techniques covered in each class. He promotes an ecological training approach that stimulates curiosity, develops adaptability, and builds problem-solving skills under pressure.
